The Mahiga Creek

Info

By Maria Armie Sheila Garde

Informal settlers have been living along Mahiga Creek in Cebu City for about 20 years. Thirty-two families, however, lost their homes recently when the Squatters Prevention, Elimination and Encroachment Division (Speed), upon Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama’s orders, demolished about 30 shanties built within the creek’s three-meter easement zone.

Some of the displaced families were temporarily relocated inside Lot 27 of the Cebu City Impounding Area at the North Reclamation Area.

It may take a few more months before these settlers find their new home and start a new life…but how about the Mahiga Creek? How long will it take before it gets to restore its life?
