Election ban, delayed funds hamper flood control plans

WITH the onset of the rainy season, projects that will protect residents in Cebu City from flash floods are all the more needed.

The City Government has at least P108 million worth of flood mitigation and prevention projects that are already funded. However, some of these projects have not yet been implemented.

The funds for the flood mitigation projects were included in the third supplemental budget, approved early this year during the term of former mayor Tomas Osmeña, now south district congressman.

In the barangays of the north district, the construction of drainage systems, riprap walls, irrigation canals and lined canals has not yet started.

In random interviews with Sun.Star Cebu, north district village chiefs said the delayed release of funds was the reason they have failed to immediately start implementing their projects. Read rest of story

More bets want to be SK chair than brgy. captain

MORE candidates want to become chairperson of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) compared to those running for barangay captain.

There are 2,593 people who filed their certificates of candidacy (COCs) for barangay chairman in 1,202 barangays in Cebu.

As for SK heads, 2,745 teenagers are vying for the post.

But candidates for the barangay council reached 21,517, higher than the SK council, with only 15,951 applicants.

Cebu City had the most COCs filed, with 195 vying for chairperson, 107 for the north district and 88 for the south. There are 969 people who want to become barangay councilors in the north and 729 in the south. Read rest of story
