THE Philippines will host the 2017 International Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad (ITMO) in Davao City this November.
According to main organizer Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), the 2017 ITMO will be held from November 8 to 12 at the Grand Regal Hotel and Waterfront Insular Hotel in Lanang, Davao City.
“We are very delighted that the 2017 International Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad will be held in President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown,” said Dr. Isidro Aguilar, MTG president.
600 participants and delegates from the Philippines and other countries will join the upcoming ITMO.
The MTG is organizing the international math contest in coordination with the Department of Education and the Department of Science and Technology under the supervision of the International Mathematics Competition Executive Board.
As part of the competition, all the contestants and delegates will have a sightseeing tour in Davao City. A Cultural Night will also showcase the different cultures of each participating country.
“The contest will not only foster friendship among young math enthusiasts in the Philippines and other countries but it will showcase the beauty of Davao City to our foreign contestants and guests,” Dr. Aguilar added.
He expressed gratitude to the Davao City government and its people for their support to the contest.
Countries and regions that are expected to join the contest are Australia, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Mexico, Nepal, Romania, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
Under the competition, students in Grades 5 and 6, and high school students not enrolled in Senior High School or its equivalent are allowed to join. Each team consists of a team leader, a deputy team leader and four contestants.
The ITMO consists of three contests: the individual competition, team competition and group contest, and math games competition.
The Philippines through MTG hosted the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary School Students in 2011 in Naga City and 2013 in Alfonso, Cavite; 2009 Philippine International Mathematics Competition in Iloilo City; 2005 Philippine Elementary Mathematics International Contest and Asia Inter-Cities Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad in Tagbilaran, Bohol; and 2001 Invitational World Youth Mathematics Inter-Cities Competition.
