WITH the way the Downstream Oil Industry Deregulation Act of 1998 was crafted, it has become difficult to track the rise and fall (if there is any) of the prices of petroleum products. We have many oil firms and each of them takes turn in adjusting their prices whenever they want.
Reaction does not therefore come with every price adjustment, unlike when the oil industry was still regulated. Instead, it comes after an accumulation of adjustments, like when prices bridge the P60 level. By then the effect of the price increases is already telling. (Read more)

RENATO Corona’s stay as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will either be cut short or continued just before lawmakers go on a one-month break this June, the impeachment court’s presiding officer said Tuesday.
Aware of criticisms that the trial has been dragging on for months, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile assured that he and his fellow judges can render a decision on or before the close of the second regular session of the 15th Congress on June 7. (Read more)

A JUDGE in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona criticized the prosecution panel and the head of the Land Registration Authority (LRA) for being “unfair” and “careless” after they disclosed the Supreme Court official’s alleged 45 properties.
“I advise you, next time around, if someone requests a list like this, you should first verify the properties that you will include in the list,” Senator Joker Arroyo told LRA Administrator Eulalio Diaz III. (Read more)

CHIEF Justice Renato Corona belatedly declare in his statement of assets and liabilities (SALN) the existence of a prime condominium unit at The Columns in Makati City due to defects found in the room, the defense panel maintained Tuesday.
In her testimony, Carmina Cruz, customer relations officer of property developer Alveo Land, said they received a letter from Cristina dated June 7, 2008 stating that the Chief Justice’s wife refused to accept the 48-square-meter unit. (Read more)

THE prosecution panel said Tuesday that the latest survey indicating 47 percent of the population believes that Chief Justice Renato Corona is guilty of impeachment charges shows that most Filipinos were convinced of the evidence they have presented.
“It only shows that the people monitoring the impeachment proceedings are convinced by the evidence presented by the prosecution,” House Deputy Speaker Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III said. (Read more)

TWO party-list lawmakers said they have been receiving death threats through text messages since last month for their position on the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona and the recent oil price hikes.
“Bayan Muna is involved in many issues ranging from cases filed against former Gloria Arroyo, the impeachment proceedings, oil price hikes, and other controversial corruption scandals in government,” party-list Representatives Neri Colmenares and Teddy Casiño. (Read more)
