Chief Justice Renato Corona said Thursday that Philippines is now in grave peril of teetering towards a one-man rule as recent events showed that judiciary independence is undermined.
Corona, speaking at the silver anniversary convention of the Philippine Women Judges Association Inc. in Manila Hotel, said by judicial independence, the judiciary strengthens the fundamental doctrine of separation and equality of powers of the three branches of government — executive, legislative, judiciary. The House prosecution panel slammed the attempt of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s lawyers to “bloat” the Supreme Court (SC) official’s income to justify his condominium buying-spree and millions kept in bank accounts.
Araceli Bayuga, SC chief judicial officer, told the impeachment court Wednesday that Corona received P21.64 million in salaries, allowances and other emoluments from 2002 to 2011. (Read more)

AN ASSESSOR from Taguig City presented to the Senate impeachment court Thursday documents showing the tax declarations of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s high-end condominium units, which were not publicly declared for the years during which they were bought.
House prosecutors alleged that Corona concealed the existence of the Bellagio penthouse and the Bonifacio Ridge unit in his statement of assets and liabilities and net worth (SALN) in 2004 and 2009, respectively. (Read more)

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Thursday ended a debate on values of property that Chief Justice Renato Corona declared in his asset statements, saying there was no need to “belabor the point.”
The prosecution has said Corona undervalued the properties in his statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALN). (Read more)
