FOR a moment there, I thought that our people have lost interest in local politics as their attention was drawn to the circumstances that resulted from the Corona impeachment trial. It appeared that the masses were dazzled by the new attitude and respect for our laws that were aroused and generated by the process.
But then, as politics began to recover its lost ground, so we bring to the national consciousness the fact that there are some people, including Gov. Gwen Garcia, who has interest to promote as possible candidate for the Senate. (Read more)

True to their word, two other spokespersons of the impeachment prosecution team voluntarily released their 2011 statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALNs) one week after the ouster of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
House Deputy Majority Leader Romero Frederico “Miro” Quimbo and Aurora Representative Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara earlier hesitated to provide copies of their SALNs to media to avoid sidetracking the impeachment trial of the former chief magistrate. (Read more)

A PETITION filed with International Criminal Court (ICC) accuses Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago of being unfit to join the 18-judge tribunal handling cases of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) received Thursday nominations for a woman’s rights advocate, a state lawyer and a former law school dean, a day after formally opening nominations for the Chief Justice post.
The three nominees were lawyer Katrina Legarda, Solicitor General Francis Jardeleza and Cesar Villaneuva, dean emeritus of the Ateneo Law School. (Read more)

THE House of Representatives held on Wednesday a victory party for the “unprecedented achievement” of its 11-man prosecution team during the impeachment trial of ousted Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Before it adjourned sine die, the House adopted House Resolution (HR) 2463 commending the congressmen-prosecutors; HR 2462 for the 57 private prosecutors; and HR 2461 for the impeachment secretariat staff. (Read more)

THE Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) formally opened Wednesday the nomination for the position of chief justice in the Supreme Court.
In its website, the JBC announced that its secretariat will receive applications or nominations until June 18, after which it will begin scheduling the public interview of aspirants to the top judicial post. (Read more)

THE recent conviction of Renato Corona by the Senate acting as impeachment court has exposed, for us, one interesting point: the dearth of Cebuano names recognizable enough at the national level to be mentioned as chief justice material.
Considering that Cebu has already produced in recent history two Supreme Court chief justices in Marcelo Fernan and Hilario Davide Jr., this can also be considered a gloomy point. (Read more)

FORMER Supreme Court spokesman Jose Midas Marquez turned down Tuesday calls for him to step down as court administrator, a position that he used to hold in a concurrent capacity during the aborted terms of ousted Chief Justice Renato Corona and retired Chief Justice Reynato Puno.
“Wala naman akong nakikita na rason para magbitiw (I find no reason to quit),” said Marquez on renewed calls made by the party-list group Akbayan. (Read more)

A member of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) defended Monday the constitutionality of its decision to require new applicants for the vacancy in the Supreme Court (SC) to submit a waiver of confidentiality on their bank deposits.
Lawyer Milagros Fernan-Cayosa, who represents the lawyers group Integrated Bar of the Philippines, said the decision to impose said additional requirement was unanimously approved by the members of the council for those aspiring for the lone vacancy in the High Court. (Read more)

Supreme Court employees hugged and cried before former Chief Justice Renato Corona as he cleared his desk on Monday, nearly a week after he was removed from office by the Senate impeachment court.
Corona, along with wife Cristina and daughter Carla, went to his spacious office in the Supreme Court’s second floor to pack his things. The Coronas stayed for at least three hours, busily receiving employees who brought T-shirts and photos of the magistrate for him to sign. (Read more)
