MYMP (Make Your Mama Proud)
MYMP is short for Make Your Mama Proud.
It is one of the known acoustic bands in the country. It has five members, but the core of the band is the duo — Juris Fernandez and Chin Alcantara.
The band members’ career started when iFm’s station manager, Raymond Ryan, watched their gig and set a meeting with a producer to create their debut album, Soulfly Acoustic. This happened in 2003.
In 2005, MYMP released its second and third album “Beyond Acoustic” and Versions, respectively, through Ivory Music. These albums were re-released in the same year.
The band’s fourth album, New Horizon, came in 2006.
MYMP’s last album, Now, was released in 2008, still under Ivory Music. This after the group signed a deal with Star Records.
Cover tunes popularized by MYMP include “A Little Bit,” which won the Awit People’s Choice award for Favorite Song; “Every Little Thing,” of Sting; and “Waiting in Vain” of Bob Marley.
MYMP has been known for producing a “fusion” of several music genres. Juris enjoys the R-n-B style and some pop, while Chin prefers the guitar styles of Eric Clapton.
Other members of the band are John Angeles (drums), Oja Jimenez (keyboard) and Emil Rivas (bass).
Juris, born Julie Iris Fernandez, is the lead singer of the band. She was born in Davao City and finished BS Psychology.
