PH Embassy in Beirut releases office schedule during Ramadan

THE Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Beirut, London issued an announcement informing the public of their operation schedule during the holy month of Ramadan last May 26.

As of Monday, May 29, the embassy is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with no lunch break.

The embassy is open from Monday to Friday, except during Lebanese and Philippine holidays.

The embassy will resume regular office hours on the first working day after Eid’l Fitr on June 26.

Muslims around the world fast during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar/Hijrah calendar.

Every year, Muslims are reminded of their spiritual obligation to fast during this time. Fasting is one of the five Pillars (along with a belief in Allah, a pilgrimage to Mecca, charity, and prayer five times each day) of Islam.

Fasting during this month begins at dawn and ends at sunset. It is a requirement asked of all able-bodied adults, and the persons who are exempted to fast are women who are in their monthly period of menstruation; those who are sick; and those who are traveling to far places.

Knights of Rizal Dimasalang Chapter, Toronto Kapuso Lions Club


Sir Joaquin (Jojo) T. Taduran, Jr.(left), KGOR deputy commander of the Knights of Rizal Dimasalang Chapter, has convinced Dario Agustin, to join the  Rizal Dimasalang Chapter and the Toronto Kapuso Lions Club in order to continue serving the Filipino community in Toronto and other parts of the province of Toronto.

Sir Mario Alpuerto, KGOR, is the Chapter Commander of the Knights of Rizal Dimasalang Chapter with  Sir George R. Poblete, KGCR, is the Chapter Adviser. Sir Eduardo C. Prillo, KGOR, the incumbent Regional Commander of the Knights of Rizal Canada Region, together with  Sir Jaime T. Marasigan, KGOR, Rizal Supreme Council Supreme Council Deputy Supreme Council Exchequer, belong to the Rizal Dimasalang Chapter.

Sir George R. Poblete, KGCR, and Sir Jaime t. Marasigan, KGOR, served as the Regional Commanders of the  Knights of Rizal Canada. Region.

Sir Mario Alpuerto, KGOR, is the Rizal Canada Region Exchequer and chairman of the of the Special Project. Sir Joaquin (Jojo) T. Taduran, Jr., KGOR,  is the Rizal Canada Region Pursuivant and chairman of the Public Relations and Publicity Committee.

Dario Agustin is just waiting for the right time to officially submit his officially submit his application papers to the Knights of Rizal Dimasalang Chapter  and the Toronto Kapuso Lions Club. (Manuel Papa)

27 Filipinos get UK Chevening Scholarships

TWENTY seven Filipinos have been awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarships by the UK Government for the coming academic year.

The scholars were recently honoured at a reception hosted by Ambassador Asif Ahmad at his residence on 25 August.

The event was attended by the families of the scholars, members of the Chevening alumni network in the Philippines and scholarship co-sponsors, Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), GlaxoSmithKline Philippines, Megaworld Foundation and Shell Philippines Inc.

“I’m delighted to see so many Chevening Scholarships awarded in the Philippines this year. This is our biggest number ever so these future leaders are making history. Working with our partners, we are very fortunate to have been able to increase the number of scholarships this year, reflecting our strong commitment to a dynamic UK-Philippine relationship. And we plan to see this number increase next year. The application window for that is now open so I urge all potential future leaders with a dynamic vision for the future to seriously consider Chevening. Competition for scholarships remains intense, so my warm congratulations to our 27 successful scholars. I’m sure your time in the UK will help you develop your vision and plans and allow them to be put into effect when you return to the Philippines,” Ambassador Asif Ahmad said.

Ambassador Ahmad also thanked BPI, GlaxoSmithKline, Megaworld and Shell for their support which has helped send the biggest batch of Filipino scholars to the UK.

The Chevening Scholars are: Ysmael Mangorsi, Maila Beniera, Maria Carmen Fernandez, Tasneem AbdulRauf, Asnin Pendatun, Maria Lourdes Gregorio, Edy Lynn Santiago, Julius Lotilla, Paul Zambrano, Ianela Carla Ortiz, Benedict Nisperos, Carizza Castelo, Anya Palileo, Micaela Papa, Asryman Rafanan, Raymond Astillas, Robert Siy, Aison Garcia, Rhio Fuentes-Nuylan, Margarita Villanueva, Miguel Dorotan, Carmela Fonbuena, Emilio Marañon III, Baby Ruth Villarama, Marc Cebreros, Irene Valones and Ivan Ledesma.

They will pursue Masters Degrees at different educational institutions in the UK in the fields of: finance and economics, law & human rights, trade, art & film, health and sciences, governance and peace & conflict studies.

Chevening Scholarships are awarded by the British Government to those who have a vision and drive to become future leaders in their chosen fields and countries. The scholarships were named after the Chevening House, the British Foreign Secretary’s official country residence.
