120,000 devotees walk with Mary

At least 120,000 Marian devotees joined the “Walk with Mary” foot penitential procession from Fuente Osmeña to Basilica del Sto. Niño today, said Joy Tumulak of the City Traffic Operations Management (Citom).

Sinulog Idol Season 4 grand winner Claro “Chinky” Maylon Jr.

The one-week Sinulog Idol singing competition culminated Thursday night with Claro “Chinky” Maylon Jr., a second year AB Music student of the University of Southern Philippines, emerging as the grand champion.

Maylon, 21, of Naga, Cebu, will take home P15,000 and gift certificates worth P5,000 courtesy of Dole.

There should be no politics in culture and the arts, said Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama during the launching of the Devotee City along with Councilor Roberto Cabarrubias.

Both officials belong to different political groups but have worked together for years for the Devotee City, an area at the Compaña Maritima where 100 container vans are stacked together to make a two-story housing compound for those who live outside Cebu City.

Devotees only have to show their bus or boat tickets to be able to avail of the temporary housing for those visiting Cebu City for the Sinulog festivities. Read the rest of this entry

Apas high school wins this time

FOR the past five years, Apas National High School of Barangay Apas, Cebu City has placed second in the annual Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan.

Yesterday, they turned things around and won in the secondary level category of the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan at the Cebu City Sports Center.

USING simple images of the Holy Infant Jesus is part of promoting devotion, said Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

The cardinal was referring to statues that are part of an exhibit at the Ayala Center Cebu, which opened last Friday.

Sinulog Idol 2013 elimination night starts

NONE of the Sinulog Idol 2013 contestants was eliminated in the first elimination night held at the Fuente-Osmeña Circle on Friday, January 11.

The 12 contestants rendered songs of their choice on the first night Friday. They are set to perform upbeat music of the 80s tonight (Saturday night), the second day of the elimination.

Hannah Mariee Rondez, 20, who sang “Bukas na lang kita Mamahalin” by Lani Misalucha, bagged the Star of the Night award for the Song of Choice category.  [Watch their performances]

Traffic to be rerouted for launching parade

THE Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) advised motorists to follow rerouting signs today as the city kicks off the Sinulog 2013 celebration.

Citom executive director Atty. Rafael Yap said vehicular traffic from the main entrance of the Basilica del Sto. Niño on Osmeña Blvd. to the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda will be affected in today’s launching parade.

Rerouting will start at 2 p.m. until the activity is finished, he said. Read the rest of this entry

SOME 25,000 people participated in the “Walk for Jesus” at dawn yesterday.
